Concert #4 - Songs of Love and War

Directed by Steven Hodgson

Claudio Monteverdi’s eighth book of madrigals Madrigali dei guerrieri et amorosi (Madrigals of war and love) contains some of his finest work, exploring war as an allegory to the pursuit of love and the experience of love as a personal and often devastating conflict. For this intimate programme, the Consort presents selections from this exquisite collection alongside works by later composers that explore sympathetic themes, performed with Baroque triple harp.

Russian Orthodox Cathedral, Brunswick

Holy Protection Cathedral

Concert#5 - War and Peace

Directed by Warren Trevelyan-Jones

Focusing on the musical glories of the Russian Orthodox Church, the Consort presents a selection of Russian sacred music in the sublime acoustic of the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God in East Brunswick.

Whilst Russia was at war with France in the early 19th century sacred music flourished in the Imperial Court of Saint Petersburg.  The programme features music by “The Golden Three”; the Imperial Court composers Maxim Berezovsky, Artemy Vedel and Dimitri Bortniansky, alongside other sacred works by Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov & Prokofiev. At its heart will be a performance of Bortniansky’s grand Te Deum for double chorus written to commemorate the Russian victory over Napoleon in 1812.
